Tasting Notes
This coffee was picked out by Noah and Matt on their trip to Colombia in September of 2022. The Juan Martin farm was one of the few that they visited during their trip. While visiting this farm Noah hiked down the steep mountain with the rest of the group as it began to storm. On the bottom of the homepage of Sagebrush you can see a clip of him as he comes back up, drenched in rain and covered in mud.
Finca Juan Martin is a quintessential Diamond Reserve farm. When Noah and Matt were in Colombia visiting the farm they got a chance to hear and see everything the Ruiz brothers are doing with this farm. They use this farm to develop quality-focused cultivation techniques with eleven varieties and counting. They then freely share this knowledge throughout the Cauca region to help elevate the coffees near them. This then enables a higher quality of coffee throughout Colombia. We are so impressed with what this farm was doing, we were committed to going home with some. Then when we cupped this amazing coffee, we were more convinced it is a great program. This was some of the best coffee we cupped in all of Colombia, so they are producing a model to be followed.
This Gesha is a great example of why Gesha coffees are so fantastic. The coffee's extreme fruitiness makes an amazingly juicy cup and an extremely sweet coffee that is unmatched by any other varietal. This Black Label bean comes forward with a peach and honey softness, and as it develops on the tongue, it brings a very light sour taste, similar to a hibiscus fruit. Overall the extreme sweetness and fruitiness make an extremely unique experience for any coffee enjoyer.
Finca Juan Martin Coffee Production
Finca Juan Martin is an innovative and experimental farm owned and operated by Banexport. The goal and focus of this project is to cultivate, harvest, and process different varieties in order to develop appropriate practices for each step toward optimum coffee quality. Beyond this, Juan Martin serves as a resource and example for coffee producers that sell and export their coffees through Banexport. Located in the highest area of Sotara, just 30 mins from Cauca's capital of Popayan, Juan Martin is dedicated to developing environmentally-conscious practices as well as providing jobs to community members with educational opportunities.
